Presenter Biographies

Presenter biographies are in order of presentation per the Fall Meeting schedule.


Asa C. Lockhart, MD, MBA

Dr. Lockhart is a co-founder and Principal of Golden Caduceus Consultants. His firm has assisted more than 190 clients in 38 states with stabilization/rehabilitation strategies, staffing plan formulation, fair-market value assessments, strategic planning, perioperative flow optimization, updates and health system reform positioning strategies, and request for proposal assistance. He received his Medical Doctor in 1973 from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Houston at Clear Lake in Houston, Texas, in 1998. He completed his Anesthesiology Internship and Residency at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia from 1974–1976.  He has been very active in organized medicine; his activities include serving as President of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists in 1990–1991, Course Director for the Certificate in Business Administration (2000–present) and Committees on Practice Management (1999-present) and Future Models of Anesthesia (2010–2016) with the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He served as a physician advisor during the development of the MGMA Cost Survey for Anesthesia and Pain Management Practices and Chair of the Texas Medical Association’s Ad Hoc Committee on Accountable Care Organizations (2010–2012). He serves as Vice-Chair of the Texas Delegation to the AMA (2014–present) and on the AMA Council on Medical Service (2014–present) as well as a Vice-Chair of the National Physicians Council for Healthcare Policy. 


Robert Hsiung , MD

Dr. Robert Hsiung, MD, is an anesthesiologist and critical care medicine specialist at Virginia Mason in Seattle, and has been practicing for 16 years. He graduated from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in 2002. He later completed an internship and residency at Virginia Mason and a fellowship in critical care medicine at Stanford Hospital and Clinics.


Daniela Alexianu, MD, FASA

Dr. Daniela Alexianu, MD, is an anesthesiology specialist in Spokane, WA. She specializes in anesthesiology and is the current Past President of WSSA.


Bridget Bush, MD

Bridget Bush, MD, was born and raised in Reno, NV, completing her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at the University of Nevada Reno. She worked for the government through the Department of Energy in their High Level Nuclear Waste Engineering at the Savannah River Site, SC, before entering medical school at Tulane School of Medicine, New Orleans, LA. She graduated in 2006 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and started her Internship with the US Navy at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA. After internship, she attended Flight School with the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, FL. She worked as a Flight Surgeon with the Electronic Attack squadrons VAQ-138/133/132 out of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WA, where she completed deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. Upon resigning her active duty commission, she completed Anesthesiology Residency at the Virginia Mason Medical Center and has been employed as an Attending Anesthesiologist at the Providence Regional Medical Center Everett since graduation in 2014.


Todd Donato, MD

Dr. Todd Donato, MD, is Vice President of Tacoma Anesthesia Associates (TAA), where he has practiced since 1999. He completed his anesthesiology residency and medical degree at the University of Washington. Dr. Donato is a passionate bicyclist.   


Bradley Karr, MD

Dr. Bradley Karr, MD, is President of Pacific Anesthesia Anesthesiology. He graduated from the University of Washington Medical School in 1993 and completed his residency at the University of California, San Diego in 1997. He is affiliated with numerous hospitals, including Swedish Edmonds Hospital.


Arooj Simmonds, MD

Dr. Arooj Simmonds, MD, is an anesthesiology specialist in Seattle. She graduated from University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2006 and is a provider for US Anesthesia Partners, Washington. She completed her residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center in 2010 and a fellowship at Duke Medical Center in 2011.


James Stangl, MD

Dr. James Stangl, MD, graduated with honors from Northwestern University Medical School in 1992. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Washington in 1996 followed by a pain fellowship at UW in 1997. After a year as a junior faculty member at UW, Dr. Stangl entered private anesthesia practice. He has held full time positions with Wenatchee Anesthesia Associates, Pacific Anesthesia, and since 2009 with Tacoma Anesthesia Associates. He has served on the WSSA Board of Directors since 2008, is a past WSSA Vice President and President, and is currently an ASA delegate for Washington State. Dr. Stangl practices full time at Tacoma General, Mary Bridge Children's, and Allenmore Hospitals in Tacoma. His clinical interests include cardiothoracic and regional anesthesia as well as acute pain management.


Ian Wright, MD, FRCA

Dr. Wright graduated with Honors from the University of London in 1980. After training in Great Britain in Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology and Critical Care, he moved to the USA and assumed a faculty position at the University of Washington in 1992. His clinical interests were cardiothoracic and transplant anesthesia, and he became Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. In 1998, he moved to private practice at Swedish Medical Center, Seattle, (SMC) where he currently practices full-time. At SMC he has held a succession of administrative positions, including Chief of Cardiac Anesthesia, Chief of the Division of Anesthesia, Medical Director for Anesthesia, and latterly, Vice President for Perioperative Services, Swedish Health Services.


Mary Dale Peterson, MD, MSHCA, FACHE, FASA

Mary Dale Peterson, MD, MSHCA, FACHE, FASA, was named first vice president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) in October, 2017 and will serve for one-year. Dr. Peterson is vice president of Driscoll Children’s Health System, emeritus staff at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, and president and CEO of Driscoll Children’s Health Plan in Corpus Christi, Texas. She is also a clinical assistant professor at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Dr. Peterson has held numerous positions in the Society. Most recently she served on the ASA Administrative Council as treasurer and as chair of the ASA Section on Fiscal Affairs. Dr. Peterson has been on the ASA Board of Directors since 2006 and she is also a member of the ASA Charitable Foundation’s Board of Directors. In addition to her duties at the ASA, Dr. Peterson works extensively with the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, where she serves as treasurer. She serves on the Executive Committees of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists and Nueces County Medical Society, and has been an active member of the American Medical Association since 2004 and the Texas Medical Association for 19 years. Dr. Peterson received her Bachelor's of Science degree from Texas A&M University. She completed her Doctorate of Medicine and anesthesiology residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where she was elected chief resident. Dr. Peterson also completed a Master of Science in Health Care Administration at Trinity University in San Antonio. She is board-certified in anesthesiology and critical care medicine. Dr. Peterson resides in Corpus Christi, Texas with her husband, Rafael Coutin, MD. They are the proud parents of three sons: Christopher, Mark and Steven.
