The Washington Medical Commission Voted Unanimously Today to Adopt Rules to License Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants in Washington

After receiving written comments from the public, today the Commission heard verbal testimony from 13 individuals: 12 in support of the rules and 1 opposed. WSSA’s President, Dr. Erik Condon, testified at the hearing, as did several CAAs from around the country who hope to begin practicing in Washington. Senator Ron Muzzall also provided testimony supporting the rules and how they align with the Legislature’s intent. The only opposing testimony was from a representative from the Washington Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
Commission staff stated they expect to be able to begin the process of issuing licenses to CAAs as early as September.
Thanks to everyone who submitted written comments in support of the rules. The Commission noted they received twice as many comments in favor as opposed.

Governor Inslee Signs Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants Bill
Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee signed into law Senate Bill 5184, which authorizes certified anesthesiologist assistant (CAA) licensure in the state. The law, which is the first to introduce the role of CAAs to the Pacific Northwest, will be effective in June 2024. “Gov. Inslee’s action will help Washington ensure there are enough anesthesia health care professionals to keep up with the growing demand for anesthesia services, while ensuring optimal patient safety under the Anesthesia Care Team model of care,” said WSSA President Timothy Clement, M.D. “We’d like to express our gratitude to members of the state legislature who worked tirelessly with WSSA to help advance this bill.”
In January 2025, the state Medical Commission unanimously approved the draft regulatory language for CAA licensure and agreed to proceed to the next step in the rule making process (CR-102). The rules hearing is tentatively scheduled for May 9, 2025. Learn More >
